What is the Fortis study?
Fortis is a clinical research study exploring the safety and effectiveness of an investigational study medication, given as a liquid, for children and teens 17 years old and younger with iron deficiency anemia.
“Investigational” refers to a medication that has not received approval from regulatory authorities for the treatment of a particular condition. Sometimes, approved medications are used for different purposes, for new populations, or administered in different ways, making them investigational.
What is the study medication?
The study medication, called ferric maltol, is an oral medication currently approved in capsule form by some regulatory authorities in the EU and U.S. for the treatment of iron deficiency in adults. It is designed to make iron more present in the body and easier for the body to absorb and use. However, because the study medication has not been approved for use in children, it is considered investigational.
During the study, participants will be randomly assigned to receive the study medication or ferrous sulfate, a common type of iron supplement. Both medications are given as a liquid. All participants under 2 years old will receive only the study medication.
